MUD Theatre Solidarity on Solitary Confinement
April 4 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Join MUD Theatre Project on Saturday, April 4th for Solidarity on Solitary Confinement — a performance featuring Marvin Alexis in support of the Nelson Mandela Act!
The event will showcase a to-scale cell created by MUD Theatre using PVC pipes and zip-ties — common restraints used in policing and prison practices. This cell will be installed in Springfield this coming spring in support of the The Nelson Mandela Act – HB 1428 / SB 65.
WHEN: Saturday, April 4th from 5:30-8:30pm
WHERE: Walls Turned Sideways 2717 W. Madison St. Chicago, IL
In Illinois law, there are no limits on how long a person can be held in isolated confinement, which violates an internationally recognized standard called the Nelson Mandela Rules.
HB 1428 / SB 65 would require:
Everyone be allowed out of their cells at least four hours a day, or that when a person needs to be kept in a cell for more than 20 hours a day, that can only last 10 days in any 180-day period.
People who are under 21, over 55, have a disability (as defined by ADA), or are pregnant or postpartum could not be in isolated confinement.
