Liberation Lab: Revolutions Per Minute w/ Maria Gaspar

July 7 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

REGISTRATION FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS CLOSED!

In Revolutions Per Minute, participants will explore and respond to freedom music and generate lyrics for our own collective freedom song. Listening, dancing, moving, and grooving are just one part of this series. The series also explores the role of movement in release and liberation, and how music and sound can transcend borders, barriers, and other forms of oppression. Participants will engage in writing, drawing, and movement to produce a set of artifacts, including songs and drawings. The final songs will be incorporated into an upcoming community-based project by the artist, Maria Gaspar, titled Revolutions Per Minute. Be part of the revolution!  Experienced artists and writers with familiarity and interest in Chicago House Music or other electronic dance music are a plus, but not a requirement.

This workshop is taught by Maria Gaspar. Maria is a Chicago-born, first-generation, interdisciplinary artist who works in installation, sculpture, sound, and performance. Gaspar’s artworks look at issues of spatial justice in order to amplify, mobilize, or divert structures of power through individual and collective gestures. For the past decade Maria has worked on several projects that attempt to dismantle borders, transcend penal matter, and turn places of precarity into places of possibility. Check out her projects that include site interventions at the largest single-site jail in the country, the Cook County Department of Corrections, in her childhood neighborhood.
